It is now obligatory to submit VAT returns online to HMRC and while it is fairly straightforward to register when you know how, for many new businesses it is a daunting prospect. I have helped a few clients through the process and I have listed below step by step how to do this:
- Go to Register for HMRC taxes
- Select the option: I want to sign up to use the online service for a tax for which the business is already registered
- Select Organisation then VAT (submit return or change details)
- You will need your VAT regn certificate or details from it to set up the service
- VAT Registration Number
- Principal Place Of Business postcode
- date of registration for VAT
- final month of last VAT return submitted (N/A for new registrations)
- box 5 figure on last VAT return submitted (0.00 for new registrations)
- You will be given a username, and have to select your own password
- I would print a copy of that page and note the password too
- They will then send an activation code in the post within a few days
- Once you have received the code log back in to HMRC
- This time select Log in and then the VAT option
- Enter your username and password
- Then “Activate or access service online”
- Once in the VAT screen “Amend registration details”
- You will then have to enter your activation code to give you full access to your online VAT area
You should receive a reminder at the end of each quarter that your VAT is due, then you will have to log in to file the return.
This article is a basic guide and there may be small changes in the process made by HMRC in the future. Nonetheless we hope you find this useful. If you would like advice in this or other areas feel free to call. Alastair Wood, AW Accounting, Gravesend, Kent – Accountants who “speak your language”
